Background

KHRW-Sulaimanya Center was established in 1993 and has been providing village reconstruction, water and sanitation, health services, preventive medicine and women health to low-income families and their children. KHRW-Sulaimanya has renovated 114 houses in Qara Hanjeer funded by the US Department of State in 2002-2003. Workshops and training on human rights and democracy building has been continuously provided at the KHRW Center. Health education and awareness is provided at the Center including Women and Democracy initiative since 2004.

The Health Clinic in Sulaimanya

The Health Clinic in Sulaimanya was opened in 2002 and provides primary health care, preventive medicine, and women health to low income families and their children. The clinic is equipped with dental services that provides dental hygiene, awareness to children and youth and their families.

Women and Democracy Initiative

The Women and Democracy Initiative develops the capacity of Iraqi women, in tandem with women’s associations, local NGOs, and other women’s groups throughout northern Kurdish region in Iraq, to effectively advocate for democratic rights and opportunities for women in a new democratic Iraq. Activities in Bazian and other places include:

  • Continue development of women's organizations at the grassroots level
  • Continue leadership training and advocacy training
  • Organize advocacy around the formation of the new Iraqi constitution
  • Continue development of women’s media participation
  • Develop women’s participation in creating the new constitution and representative government
  • Microenterpise for women
  • Literacy classes
  • Sewing classes and workshops for women
